Why do we keep having the same argument?
Why do we keep having the same argument?
The repeated fight is usually a repeated move. Change your first sentence or your exit, and the script has to find a new second line.
What may actually be happening
You are both trying to get a need met inside a scene you have already memorised. The topic, dishes or lateness or tone, is the costume. The move is the same: accuse, defend, enlarge, leave.
Look at it from both sides
One person wants acknowledgment before a plan. The other wants a plan before a feeling. If you keep starting at your half, you will keep meeting their half.
What you can do
Agree on a pause word before the next round. Start with the request in one sentence and one example. Ask what they heard. If the old script begins, name it: 'We are in the usual fight. I am going to try a shorter version.'
What not to do
Do not stockpile proof during the calm days. Do not require them to admit the whole history before you discuss tonight. Do not have the fight in front of an audience that makes retreat impossible.
Try this today
Write the sentence you wish you had used last time. It should fit in a text and contain no 'always'. Use that sentence first the next time the topic appears.
